Creating your dream life in one hour a day: 6 tips to get you started

Where I am in my life today feels like a dream come true.

For decades I worked in an office (and then our retail business) but I longed to be at home, a happy housewife with her creative pursuits.  I am a homebody who loves to create a serene space.  Now that I work from home as a writer I feel like I get the best of all worlds: spending a lot of time in my home environment, satisfying my creativity and being self-employed too.

In this video I share with you my six tips to getting started on creating your dream life… in an hour a day.  I wanted to talk from this angle because a lot of ladies say they don’t have time to do anything different when they are already working hard at their job and looking after their home and family.  I want to encourage you to not settle for ‘the normal life’ such as this if you want more.

And it’s not just about becoming a writer either, it’s about following whatever that dream life is for you – whether it’s starting your own business on the side or something completely different.

I hope you enjoy this video and please let me know your thoughts in the comments!

xx Fiona

PS.  I know the video is a little quiet again *le sigh*, but I have now worked out the issue. Another new video has already been recorded, but after that... the sound will be louder! Yay!

Mentioned in my video is the free ten-email mini course to start creating your dream life as a successful author.  If this is something that interests you, you can request to join here:

  1. The sea is made of many single drops. I heard an interview with Jake Tapper, the CNN correspondent who wrote a spy novel. How in the world did he do that, considering being a reporter is an 18-hour-a-day job? On airplanes and in airport lounges, whenever he had a chunk of 20 minutes to an hour.
You are inspirational and I am going to play this many times to keep myself going!

  2. I'll see if I can get around to viewing this later, however, I find I am putting the videos on hold as it requires more effort, and time, to view them than it does to read a blog post or email. Some subjects appeal to me more than others, if they were all blog posts or emails I'd read them straight away, regardless, but with videos if I have to wait until later to view them I tend to forget and then don't get around to it. I may be missing out on some real nuggets!

    1. Me too...I can read a blog post quickly and take what is useful to me, but a video has to be watched from beginning to end to get the useful gems. Fiona, is there any way you can include the transcript of your video as your blog post instead of just an introduction/teaser? The link to the video can of course still be there for those who would rather watch, or for those who want to watch AND read. Thanks for considering this.

    2. I hope you don't mind me saying but I also prefer the written blog posts. I started by reading your blog and I have most of your books. If your blog had been a vlog I probably wouldn't have bothered with it in the first place. It's the same with some other "Chic" style blogs, too.

    3. I agree. I get emails from The Elegant Life and I think all Erin's posts are videos. They often sound interesting but I generally just let them go. The most recent email sounded good but the video is almost 20 minutes long. Unless I have 20 minutes to spare when I receive the email, and I'm somewhere where I can get out my headphones and listen and concentrate, I'm afraid I just don't get to benefit from it.

    4. I've just seen this video is 20 minutes long, too. I'm at work at the moment and I'm afraid can't watch it.

    5. I enjoy your videos, but I especially enjoy your written blog posts for most of the reasons the others have stated. Thank you so much for your time in posting. I enjoy the things you have to say. They are always encouraging and motivating.

  3. Fiona - Thank you for your wise words & encouragement. It is very easy in our crazy busy lives to just let it be about the mundane each day. I have found that i need to be so intentional about setting aside a bit of time each day to put towards my personal goals & dreams. Some days I am successful & some days it is all too easy that that time gets hijacked by something more pressing. But I have found that if I let that happen too often, I feel stuck & frustrated, sometimes giving up all together or just getting so distracted by the demands of life that I forget those dreams & goals. Sometimes it feels like it's a fight for that time towards personal goals. We often have to be so strategic in the planning of our time each day to make progress towards our true desires. But it is worth it, I think, otherwise we deny that which brings us true personal fulfillment & allows us to be living our most authentically. Even the smallest amount of time will add up to ultimately achieving what you hope.
Thank you, Fiona, for this encouragement. Although I love reading your blog (I'm new to it), I think you have a lovely & pleasant way about you in your videos & find them equally inspiring. Have a beautiful week!

  4. Hi Fiona! I agree with the last comment that I love your video posts. You do have a lovely presence and it makes your words that much more meaningful to hear them from you directly. You definitely provide me with spark, inspiration and motivation! I enjoy your point of view on life and have incorporated many of the tips from your various books into my life. Merci!

  5. Fiona, I think the last point in your video is the one that resonated most with me. It's not "morbid" to realize that we are all mortal! I'm 58, so if I don't live at least some of my dreams now, when exactly do I think I will? When I'm 70 I may not be as able.

You know, recent statistics about TV viewing (in the US) show that the average adult watches about 30 hrs of TV per week. That doesn't count time on the computer or phone. So it seems to me that finding time is not the real problem. We need to set aside the time to think about, visualize, and otherwise reach for our dreams. And for those who say they watch TV so they can relax and/or just zone out, I think that working on something for which you have a passion would be even more relaxing, and if you find a flow about it you'll be much more happy and energized than if you had spent that time in front of a screen. Just my two cents.

    1. Time is something I have been thinking about a lot lately. You're right about TV watching. I am looking at screens more than I care to admit.

"I think that working on something for which you have a passion would be even more relaxing, and if you find a flow about it you'll be much more happy and energized.." This is also something I have been pondering lately. I also believe this could be the case. Changing habits can be so challenging but it would be worth it!

    2. This is a really good point. If I were to cut out or really reduce screen time, it frees up my whole day.
