Why it is important to LOVE your birthday

It’s my birthday today!  There’s only one day a year when I truly feel free to toot my own horn and it’s on my birthday.  It’s the day when I feel like I am Queen of the world.  I don’t even mind that I am 46, in fact I am ecstatic about it!  And even better, (I actually feel really special about this) it is my husband’s birthday too – he is 45.  How small would the odds be that you meet the person who complements you the most… and you find out you were both born on the same day.

So why do I think it’s so important to love your birthday?

As I’ve become older I have become less and less tolerant of birthday-moaners.  ‘Another year older, another year deeper in debt’ is a saying I have heard.  ‘Don’t get old, it’s horrible’ – true quote from an acquaintance.  And then there are those who do not like acknowledging their birthday, do not like celebrating it because they are ‘getting older’.  I actually get really grumpy at this attitude and I have been known to say ‘it’s better than the alternative’, because it is!  If you are complaining about turning another year older, you are effectively saying ‘being dead would be better’.  I know that sounds shocking, but it is the absolute truth!

There will be many, many people who died at a certain age who wished that they could have celebrated an older birthday.  There are people who have a life-threatening disease who pray that they get to their next birthday.

Look at the fact that the age we are is a miracle of nature and good luck that we have not had a fatal accident or been diagnosed with a terminal illness.  Maybe then we might treat our time as precious.  Maybe if we could have known if we were ever seconds away from tragedy, Sliding Doors style, we might live every day with reverence.

So please, I beg you, love the age you are!  Celebrate your birthday with child-like enthusiasm!

Here are all the reasons why it is fantastic to love your birthday:

This one bears repeating: you are Queen for the day.

You may be lucky enough to receive cards and presents from people who care about you.

A nice dinner is probably on the cards.

The whole day feels like you are floating along on pink candyfloss.

You can legitimately buy yourself a gift.

Everyone is nice to you on that day.

You are in a good mood all day and that makes others in a good mood, even if they don’t know it is your birthday.

It is your own personal new year where you have a fresh slate available to you.

And I am sure there are millions of other good reasons to love your birthday.

What if you feel like you are not where you would like to be though?  What if you feel like you are not in the best shape you could be, are broke or single…?

I can tell you that my 30th birthday was not my most stellar.  When I was younger, I thought that when I turned 30 everything would be fabulous.  My 30th fell in the year 2000 which had a magical ring to it – a new century, and I imagined that I would have everything I desired – happily married with kids and a lovely home.

My 30th did not quite look like that.  I ‘celebrated’ in a restaurant in my hometown with my parents, nana, aunty and uncle, newly divorced and with my life only recently turned upside down by that.  You can see now why I put celebrated in inverted commas.

Yes, it was quite a sucky birthday, but guess what?  Things could only improve from there, and they did.  At that time, I went by the mantra ‘living well is the best revenge’ and determined that I would only get better with age.

And I am pleased to say that I am getting better and better with every year.  I am focused on being healthier, having more fun, and definitely being happier.  And each year just compounds the goodness, how excellent is that!

Have I brainwashed you yet?

I’d love you to contribute your favourite reason to love your birthday, why you love your birthday or your favourite way of treating yourself on your birthday.

Birthdays go from something that we look forward to for months and shout from the rooftops when we are younger, to something that we hide away and are ashamed of when we are older.  I want that to change!  Vive le birthday, I say.  Who’s with me?

  1. Bonne fête! You are absolutely right! I am enjoying my 60's in a totally different way from my earlier decades. I spent my thirties as a divorced woman with a teen-aged child, my forties building career, my fifties remarried and trying to find my way in that relationship. My sixties (first 5 years) have been spent travelling,
living in Paris, studying, reading, and learning to accept other people as I find them
without trying to change them or trying to coerce them to come on my journey.
We have these years as a gift and it would be selfish not to enjoy them and to recognize that time passes and all things change. Enjoy your day! And your life!

  2. Happy Birthday Fiona! I love your sunny attitude. My last birthday (age sixty-nine), was less than enjoyable as my husband never remembers the day. Next year I plan to enjoy my seventieth birthday in my own way. I hope you have lots of pampering and special things in your day!

    2. Might I tentatively suggest that perhaps Donna's husband just has a bad memory? Forgetting a birthday isn't the end of the world as we know it? He might show love every day of their lives in the things he does ... my husband needs nudges to remember my birthday and I don't always receive a present because, as he rightly points out, all our accounts are joint accounts, we truly share everything, and so a present would just be like paying for it myself, but he clearly loves me in all that he does for me every single day, and most importantly, has supported me through illnesses. I could not have wished for a more loving husband. That he doesn't always remember my birthday is but a minor detail. But,

    3. Sorry to hear about the forgotten birthday Donna, and I think you have the right attitude - take it on yourself to have a fantastic day. I know quite a few ladies who have simple ways to remind their husband of special occasions without outright telling them.

As Margaret says, some men aren't great at remembering dates like women are, and it doesn't mean they love us any less.

  3. Bon anniversaire, dear Fiona! And Many more to come!
As you know, I ❤️❤️❤️ celebrating my birthday! Usually indulging in my love of travel. And of course, celebrating all my family members' birthdays too.
I always had this thought that I am truly getting better with every birthday. I ❤️love getting older as to me, I do get better.... I am definitely wiser...I am so thankful with every birthday as I look back my past year and ❤️love to start my personal new year oddly with much excitement for what is to come and serenity that all is just beautiful on that day. Have a beautiful birthday with your husband! ~ Karen.

  4. First of all, a very happy birthday, Fiona! And, like you, I love my birthday (which was last month) and don't mind at all that I'm now in my 70s.
Indeed, each birthday is special, and I am made to feel special by the family. That doesn't mean I am bought expensive gifts, that isn't necessary and they know that, but they do make me feel special nonetheless.
Strangely enough, and quite different from Donna, my husband wouldn't remember my birrthday without a few gentle nudges, but that doesn't matter. The love he shows for me day by day, year by year, more than makes up for that! We have been married for 52 years and we seldom celebrate our wedding anniversary other than wishing each other Happy Anniversary because we have lived our lives showing love and consideration for each other, we don't need to embellish it, nor buy presents we neither of us need nor want.
I think we all 'celebrate' these special times in our own ways, husband and I seldom buy each other presents, but we have what we want - within reason - during the year. But on a birthday I am made to feel special by the family, and that is lovely. In fact, I don't need to have presents heaped upon me to make me feel special. The love they show, and not just on my birthday but all year round, does that in spades.

  10. Happy birthday Fiona and to your husband as well.

This post really hit home for me today. Just last night we learned that my Son In Law's cousin is suffering a major loss of her 17 year old daughter, and possibly her husband. In a horrific traffic incident, her husband rolled their car and their daughter was killed. The husband/father and a friend of the daughter are both in life threatening condition. So very sad, and how much of a reminder to celebrate that we are still here when the occasion arises.

As far as celebrating for me, usually it means the whole family eats together (with our schedules that doesn't usually happen). Often we BBQ a special meal, something we wouldn't normally splurge on (steak and lobster is a favourite). I don't always care to go out for a meal, but I do love having something special at home...and presies are always nice and welcomed.

  11. H*A*P*P*Y B*I*R*T*H*D*A*Y to both of you!! I love birthdays. Alpha Hubby and I have this "joke" that for one day, the birthday celebrant is right all day long and has total control of the remote control! This works especially well for him (smile). We fix each others favorite meal - it's tough for him since his b.d. is so near U.S. Thanksgiving day, occasionally ON the day. I try to do a huge blowout for him the weekend before if it does fall on T-giving day. We don't eat sweets except a small cake on birthdays. Gifts are sometimes a part of the day, cards for sure (which can get as expensive as a gift, ho ho!). There is just something special in the atmosphere all day long. We are healthier than ever and planning to stay that way, so with no aches and pains, no sickness and disease, no lack, we are super blessed and celebrate every year because of that!

I like your story of how turning 30 was not a very celebratory event (and did not know you were once divorced) but your strength and optimism turned things around. I always say "living well is the best revenge!" Birthdays have always been very special to me and I look forward to every one. Turning 50 next year and it is exciting. I always have a special dinner with my daughters and treat myself to a small yet meaningful gift. Again- happy birthday- enjoy!

  13. A very happy birthday to you, Fiona, and Mr. Chic! I sincerely wish you both a beautiful day and a laughter-filled personal year ahead.

On my birthday, it honestly feels great to reflect that I have "survived, if not thrived for another year" and thank the Universe for looking after me during the past year.

My favorite reason to love my birthday is the fact that there are so many exciting, lovely and intriguing things to learn and discover! I'm a perpetual learner and the world is my oyster, so to speak. I also love my birthday because as you've said, it's the single day out of 365 that's truly unique to me. Bien sur, there are plenty of others in the world who share my birthday but that's perfectly alright. In fact, I love the immediate, special bond I have with folks who share my birthday, which coincidentally, is International Women's day. Mom and dad had a hunch I'd be a girl.

My favorite way of treating myself on my birthday is having a zero-guilt cooking and cleaning-free day. I will have anything I desire for breakfast to jump start the day, followed by a delicious restaurant lunch, which is succeeded by a stroll in the park to observe some furry four-legged friends and other creatures. A nap ensues then dinner at my parents' for a sweet home-cooked meal (no washing up at all for moi). The day concludes with a scrumptious slice (ok, half a pie) of tiramisu and a relaxing full body and head massage from hubby! I cannot WAIT for my next birthday! Fiona, you are to blame. ;)

Thanks to Jennifer from the Daily Connoisseur, I found a treasure trove of inspirational writings that is your blog, Fiona, and I am so very glad to meet you virtually. I still can't believe my fortune at winning your 30 Chic Days book from Olive of An Olive Sea (yup, that's me)!

Yes, it's wonderful to learn new things, I also consider myself a perpetual learner! We are never bored, are we?

  21. Happy Birthday! I should have known you were a fellow Libra in all your similar musings and habits as mine. I turned 51 this week and one of my older co-workers was one of those "moaners" as you mentioned referred to birthdays as "they only get worse". I actually spoke up and said I completely disagreed with her that I love being the age I am and I'm grateful for my wisdom and experience. It makes me a happier person now than when I was half my age. Having lost close family members while they were young(my mother 47 and my younger brother 42) I am GRATEFUL to celebrate EVERY birthday!

  22. Happy Birthday Fiona! I totally agree a birthday should be celebrated. And I love your choice of photo; one of my favourite movies. I actually celebrate my birth ‘day’ every month. I was born 2 days before Christmas and ‘my’ day tends to get lost in the shuffle. So on the 23rd of each month I get myself a treat. Sometimes it’s just a really good box of chocolates or a bunch of tulips (or both!). Other times I’ll get a coffee table book I’ve been coveting or a new pair of shoes that aren’t ‘practical’. 23. Almost three years ago, my best friend from our earliest school days passed away due to complications from multiple sclerosis. She was diagnosed at the young age of 25, and for many years, the disease progressed slowly. Once we turned 35, however, it really became aggressive. She quickly went from almost fully functioning to using a cane to a wheelchair. Throughout her illness, she never lost her sense of humor. For example, when she was stuck in the bathroom in her home and had to be helped by firefighters, she gave a full report on how good-looking they were. From that point on, anytime she required their assistance (due to falling, mostly), she would rate "this crew" against "the last crew"! I was in constant awe of her courage and positive outlook on life. The last birthday we celebrated together was our 47th; she died shortly before turning 48. I am now 51, and each year, when I am on the verge of complaining about getting older, I think of my dear friend and how she would have LOVED to have the opportunity to do just that. -- Kay, San Francisco, CA

  28. Happy Birthday Fiona ! And also to you beloved hubbie.
I, too, enjoy birthdays and am bemused when others poo poo their own. From a young age my mum has always made a fuss of birthdays and I guess that's where I learnt it. I turned 48 on my last birthday and it still sounds odd when I think of that number - as if last time I looked I was 29 ha ha. My attitude is that it is only a number. I always buy myself a birthday present, not necessarily extravagant. In fact this year it was a new one piece swimming costume for swimming laps as my old one was starting to perish from the strong chlorine in the pool. It is patterned and brightly coloured and I love it. Husband and I typically go away for my birthday (but we're unable to this year due to my health issues) which means that I spend the whole day with him and have him all to myself, which is the best present of all :) My no.1 birthday tradition for myself is that I have cake for lunch - lemon meringue pie if I can find it but something else scrumtious if I can't - and I must also have a swim. I love getting birthday cards and any that arrive beforehand are kept unopened until the morning of my birthday when I sit in bed with my cup of tea and open them. I also love getting 'happy birthday' phone calls and text messages.
The photo at the top of this blog is gorgeous and made me giggle. Queen for a Day indeed !!

I would not have traveled to Ireland, Switzerland and Austria. I would not have danced at my sons' weddings and I would never have known my four grandkids. 37. Hope you and your husband had a wonderful birthday, Fiona! I agree with everything you wrote in your post. I think we should always celebrate each day we have to be alive and to experience the world and our loved ones. "You're only as old as you feel" is so true, so I think as I age (I'm 56) I spend more effort to stay healthy and active and to learn new things all the time. My birthday is September 11, and here in the US, when people find out that day is my birthday, they usually express sympathy for having such an "awful" birthday. I always say it was my birthday for 41 years before 9/11 happened, and that I'm so very fortunate to be able to celebrate getting older, unlike the victims of that tragedy.

  42. I will be sixty in Jan. I plan to eat cake for breakfast, which i've done many times, and treat myself to something different once a month, all year long. My parents both died in their sixties; i'm embracing it and wouldn't trade it for anything!

  43. Belated happy birthday to you & your husband! How wonderful to share the special day. I have a coworker who shares her birthday with her brother (he's one year younger)!

  44. Fiona, I'm so sorry I missed your birthday! That's what I get for not checking email for about a week. I hope you and hubby had a great day and that this will be your best year yet!

    1. Thanks so much, dear Gail! Don't worry about it, it's good not to be a slave to your email or any technology for that matter :)

We had a lovely day, thank you, and I agree - best year yet :)

  45. I received this in an email from a lovely reader and wanted to share in the comments. What I love is the motto, it is so good! Don't know why I never thought of it like that before. Here it is:

'Have a fabulous day - my motto is "celebrate the occasion not the number" (I of course started doing this once I didn't want to celebrate the number any more...)
How fantastic that you share a birthday with your Most Loved One!'
