Chic Habits: Clean Your Jewels

In honour of our wedding anniversary today I am here to remind you to
Clean your jewels. The ones I’m talking about are any rings you wear on a regular basis. My wedding and engagement ring and anything I might wear on my right hand get washed in different soaps many times a day and just as often doused in handcream. I try to work around them with the handcream but it will still slosh around my gems. I don’t take them off to wash or moisturise as I’ve heard too many horror stories of them being left behind or falling down the plughole (a big fear of mine).

When we purchased my rings three years ago, I bought a pot of jewellery cleaning solution. I used it once and then put it in the cupboard. Does this sound like you? Every so often when I came across it I would pull out the pot and clean my jewels, exclaim how lovely they looked and not do it again for another six months. Now I have decided that if I put the pot in a place where I’m likely to come across it often, I can aim for clean jewellery once a week. It’s working so far and I feel sparklier as a result.

Another jewellery cleaning solution I have been told about is gin. I haven’t tried it myself but my information comes from reliable sources (my father-in-law and also Anthea Turner, ‘Perfect Housewife’). To save wastage on gin (which naturally you will not want to do, you don’t want to be left short for g&ts at 5), may I suggest finding a small container which you can leave the gin in, and label it as a jewellery cleaning solution.

The photo above is us out last night after champagne in a swanky hotel lobby bar before dinner at the rustic Italian place we were married.

  4. You are so elegant! Happy Anniversary too. Good reminder about the rings. Mine are getting cloudy due to all the soap.

  6. I clean my jewellery with dishwashing detergent, ammonia and boiling water. This was a tip from a jeweller. The only thing I use my store bought cleaning kit for, is the great little brush that comes with it :)

  8. Good reminder...I'm always really lazy about taking out my earrings...so they always need to be cleaned. Happy anniversary! Rustic Italian restaurant? That sounds like a wonderful atmosphere. ;)

  9. Hmmmm? I posted last night but it doesn't look like it "took"--or I got deleted (?) : ). I think there were technical difficulties on Blogger (or my computer) because I couldn't comment elsewhere either AND the cute, cute picture of the two of you, had your husband's face green. That didn't seem quite right, especially on a happy, happy day photo. Now I see it is a B&W photo--which is better! Happy Anniversary! I am sure the two of you are much more sparkly together than your diamonds ever will be. xxBliss

  11. Merci, merci!

Suzanne, thank you for your recipe. I've heard you can use a really soft baby toothbrush too.

Bliss, I definitely saw your first comment and I didn't delete it so not sure what happened.

  16. I really do need to clean those sorts of pieces more often and to remember to find a cleaning cloth for my pearls.

And you two look fantastically happy!

  18. Happy Anniversary. The two of you look stunning in that photo. I hope you frame that picture, it would look lovely on a table top or shelf.

I clean my rings, diamond studs and favorite pendant about once every four to six weeks. I never wear my rings when I cook or shower so I don't have to worry about them getting to gummed up with soap and such.

  19. Nice photo, Fiona!

I can personally attest to having my jewelry cleaned in vodka. Take an old, soft (clean!) toothbrush, dip it in vodka, and gently clean your rings. They come out very sparkly!

  21. Beautiful photo! I hope you had a wonderful anniversary.

And thank you for the poke about cleaning my ring. I went under the kitchen sink to pull my cleaner out and now my ring looks gorgeous! I am ashamed to admit I can't recall the last time I cleaned it so I actually scheduled on my Blackberry a reminder to clean it the 15th of every month.

I feel more chic (and responsible) already! Merci!

  23. Happpy Anniversary - you both look so chic. You could be in Paris on your way to a fabulous nite spot for an evening of dancing.

When I clean my diamonds - after I take them out of the cleaner I use a pair of tweezers and hold them under the steam frother on my espresso machine to blow out all the crevices. They really shine after that.
